Dan Sperry Interview

Where has this week gone? It only seemed like yesterday that I wrote my last BLOG. During the week my wife and I went to see the Moscow Circus. What a great show with some absolutely amazing artists. It was all physical artistry, performed in both a comical and dramatic way. They had live musicians who interacted with the artists and really added something special to the show. I remember two years ago I did a season where I had a 'ragtime' type band play my entire show in a theatre, it took the performance to a completely new level.
My background is actually in music, I have been playing piano since the age of six and have a music degree, was also a teacher of music. If you ever get the chance to see my Chaplin act you will see just how important music is in my show. When I am working on a new routine the thing that gives me inspiration is the music. I can have a 'trick' in my mind for a long time, but until I hear the right piece of music I can't do anything with it. My floating broom is a perfect example. This sat with me for almost a year before I found the music to go with it. I then rehearsed it for six more months with the music until I put it in my show.

This week we see the final article in the series Money for Old Rope by Matthew Johnson. I am trying to twist his arm to write some more articles when he can. I know he is very busy at the moment with a new magic product that will be released soon, I can hardly wait, so here's hoping he can find time to share more of his knowledge with us all.
Very pleased to have Dan Sperry take some time out of his hectic schedule and answer a few quetsions. Dan is great guy and has one incredible show.

Allakazam Hat by Mark and Nani Wilson

This is one of the most AMAZING pieces of magic I have seen in a LONG time. This is a chance to own a part of magic history. This prop is so well made that you will want to have it in your living room for everybody to see. I wanted to share with you all a story that happened a few years back when I first met Mark Wilson.
I must be honest and say I never grew up with Mark Wilson's TV show, coming from New Zealand we grew up with British magician Paul Daniels on TV. However, I always knew who Mark Wilson was and by chance met him a few years back when TC Tahoe owned a magic shop in LA. I was hanging out at the shop with TC when Mark Wilson came in. We got to chatting and talking about magic when a young boy and his mother walked in. The young boy was looking around the shop and spotted Mark Wilsons big book on Magic. The young boy then told TC that he had bought this book but somebody at school stole it from him, so he no longer has it. Without missing a beat, TC asked the boy if he knew who the man standing next to him was. The boy looked at Mark and when it triggered that he was standing NEXT TO THE MAN WHO WROTE THE BOOK the boy almost fainted. Mark then did something that I will never forget. He went to his car and brought a copy of his book in to the shop, he signed it and handed it to the young boy as a gift. What an amazing and truly magical moment that was. Can you imagine the memory that boy has for the rest of his life. He will treasure that book and has met his first Magic Hero. I am sure we all have magic heroes, magicians we admire, we read about and we would one day like to meet. That day Mark Wilson became one of my heroes and I hope I get the chance to meet him again.

TWO NEW RELEASES

Bunnies Gone Wild

I have two new releases this week. The first is a version of Wild Card. It has many different inspirations from Peter Kane, I have included two different routines. One uses just 5 cards while the other uses 7. I had them made to fit with your business cards so you can carry them with you all the time. The basic effect is that you show 6 cards with bunny rabbits coming out of a top cat and one sexy girl card. All the bunny rabbit cards turn in to the sexy girl 'bunny' card. It's a very cute effect that always gets a great reaction and is not 'another' card trick. Thanks to TC Tahoe for sharing his version with me of wild card using only 5 cards. Wild card has been in my act for years, I originally learnt the handling from a book by a Japanese magician, the name eludes me right now, but that is the routine I've been doing and over the years have added a few of my own touches to it. I came up with the design of the cards because once people find out I'm a magician they always ask if I use rabbits in my show. It makes sense to bring out photos of my bunnie's and use them in a trick.

Headline Prediction

If you are looking for an easy to perform piece of magic/mentalism to close your show that will leave your audience agasp, then this could just be the ticket. Here is something that I've been doing to close my corporate and private house parties for over a decade. The reason I love this so much is that it is so easy to perform which means I can concentrate on the performance. It also leaves the person who booked you with a very special souviner which they will keep. I have had clients even frame the prediction letter they were so amazed! The principle is based on an idea by Milbourne Christopher uses a magazine and a playing card, however I adapted it for a newspaper and envelope and it's one of my favourite routines to perform. I have put together a manuscript with photos and detailed text explaining everything you will need to know to perform this amazing routine. I am very proud of this and those magicians who have been to some of my corporate shows know just how strong this plays. I have two very good friends in magic who I gave permission to use this and they just love it.

Here is the description on the routine:

Now released, for the first time to the magic fraternity. Used by Paul Romhany for years as a reputation builder. It can do the same for you!

Looking for a strong closing routine that will leave people talking about you long after you have leave the building! Perfect for magicians who work private parties and corporate functions who want to leave a lasting impression with the spectators! Also a souvenir that your clients will keep forever!

The magician posts a sealed envelope to the client a week prior to the show. The envelope is brought on stage by the client who confirms it is sealed and has not been tampered with. The performer brings out three different daily newspapers and a spectator is given a choice of one. Spectator takes newspaper and envelope and sits down for remainder of the show. For the finale, magician asks spectator to bring newspaper and envelope on stage. Spectator opens up sealed envelope and reads out the letter which predicts which newspaper the spectator would chose, the daily headlines, predictions that happened during the show or ANYTHING else you want to predict.

Paul Romhany has taken a basic principle by Milbourne Christopher and completely updated and changed the routine creating a reputation maker that is practical and easy to perform. This manuscript comes complete with everything you need to know to add this incredible routine to your show!

Dan Sperry Interview

Thanks to Dan Sperry for taking time out of his hectic schedule in Las Vegas where he is currently wowing audiences in "The Worlds Greatest Magic Show" and answer a few questions. Dan has one of the most original dove acts in the world today and is fast becoming a well known name in the world of magic. He has also released a few incredible magic routines including his highly innovative "dove from sketch". A few years back while touring with Canadian Illusionist Murray Hatfield, I had the privelage of working with Dan. He never missed a beat in his act and was constantly working on developing ideas and always blowing the audience away with this very unique act.
His award winning magic includes the Gold Medal for the International Stage Magic Champion at the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas, Three- time winner of the Award of Merit in Stage Magic at the IBM, he appears in many well known Las Vegas Casinos and is currently part of the Worlds Greatest Magic show. He has acheived so much at a young age and has a huge future ahead of him.

Paul - Your character on stage is very unique, what influences your magic and your performing style?

Dan - I have to be honest I'm not really sure. I remember as a kid always cheering for the villans in movies and stuff. Captain Hook was my favorite bad guy of all time, so I think I drew a lot of influence from those kind of characters. Of course they were the bad guys, but they had an innocence about them, a comedic, creepy, and even cookey type persona that gave you a sense of ease and you could laugh with them and sometimes at them. I think I unitnentionally drew inspiration from captain hook, the riddler from batman, beetlejuice, etc, guys like that. I am most influenced by other entertainment media and art that I persue on the side. I'm a huge fan of quinten terrentino and have been for as long as I can remember. I remember when my sister brought home Pulp Fiction and I watched it, i was too young to get most of it, but I could feel something about it was genius in how he makes his movies, writes his stories and plots, etc. Like I said I didn't really conciously understand it, but I know I felt something and wanted to do something like that with magic by making these situations etc. One of my favorite scenes is in Resevour Dogs when Michael Madson is about to cut off the police officer's ear while dancing to stuck in the middle with you. I thought it was sooooo brilliant and I knew I wanted to create that kind of awkward uncomfortable curiosity that you couldn't tear your eyes away from. That became the insipration for the lifesaver trick I do. I could go on forever about the movies i enjoy and other performance artists like parson's dance company, etc. I suppose many of you are waiting to hear what magicians have influenced me, to be honest, not many. But if I had to name a few they'd have to be David Copperfield, Joseph Gabriel, Richiardi, Neil Foster, Tom and Sherri, Cardini, Vito Lupo, Marshall Brodien, Jay Marshall, David Williamson, and probably Ayala.

Paul - You are a regular act in the amazing show Worlds Greatest Magic in Las Vegas. How did this come about?

Dan - Its a long story, I was originally contacted by Kevin James via Chris Randall, who was working in the show at the time, to come in and work in the show but I was on tour with Murray Hatfield so it was really almost a year in the making of being in contact and setting up a time when I could come in because Joseph Gabriel was the dove act in the show. Then right before Christmas, a convenient time came when Joseph was going to do his illusions so they brought me in to fill in for him. From what I was told nobody has ever been allowed any time over a week as their opening time in the show, they gave me three weeks as the opening act and had me in the computer system by the second day. From what I was told this has never happened before or since. So I was really blessed to have it all fall into place like that. Over the next year I'd fly out and fill in back and fourth. I finally made the move out here after doing 3 months in the show and gigged out here on the west coast, breaking in material at the Magic Castle etc and still doing Worlds Greatest Magic. But I had other contracts to fulfill so I was still jumping in and out of the show. Last summer after a 3 month contract in Athens Greece I became a full time performer in the show and have been here ever since. Joseph now does illusions in the show and I've become the bird act. It has been awesome and a huge honor that I'm still pinching myself all over to be the act that has now taken over the position of my childhood hero who influenced me to get into birds. Its just crazy.

Paul - One of the reasons you are so successful is because your act is so different than most dove acts. Any advice or tips for magicians who want to put together an act that stands out more than others?

Dan - Just be yourself. I see too may people trying to be somebody they're not. For the longest time I thought I had to listen to judeges of magic contests and tried to hide who I really was by combing my hair, dying over the colors for contests, etc etc. It was never me and never felt like me. I was doing it for them, taking advice on how to look, move and act from people who had NO idea who I was. I finially dropped all that and stayed true to myself and went my way with it and looked to nowhere else than within my heart for inspiration. The process has taken much much much longer to come up with things but now I know what works for me and what does not, what I can pull off and what I cannot. Like Don Alan said, you really need to stand in front of a mirror naked and take a good look at yourself and that will tell you who you really are.

Paul - I know you used to perform at childrens parties - what did your act consist of?

Dan - Much of the material was of my own thinking or adaptation off of other effects. I didn't do square circle, dye box, run rabbit run, or any of those things. I made sure to come up wtih all my own material to the best of my ability so that the kids could not say they've seen this one or that one before. I don't want to give out too much info because I'm planning to release my kid show material pretty soon. But an example would be the sponge balls and balls from mouth. I took big green sponge balls and cut them into weird shapes and picked one out of my nose and ate my boogers and did boogers from mouth rather than balls from mouth. I loved doing the kids parties because I feel that is where the real magicians work, in the trenches of the kids shows. I don't care how drunk and heckling and audience is, the kids shows is where your true talents will be tested not only as a magician but an entertainer. I still take on a birthday show or library show when I can, I really do miss it at times, I feel you're never too good for a kids show with all the garbage on tv, the radio, etc etc at schools, kids need magic now more than ever in their lives and a positive role model. That's what I get out most of it.

Paul - Any plans to release any products in the near future?

Dan - yes, here and there, we'll see. Besides the dove from sketch pad I have my loop holders and match gimmicks as well as my new return flight DVD to go with the deja' vu' notes. But we'll see...

Thanks again to Dan Sperry, I agree that your talents are really tested as a magician and entertainer if you can perform for children. Quite often childrens entertainers are overlooked. I performed kids parties for many years while learning my trade in New Zealand and when ever I get the opportunity I will do a children's party. I think I often have more fun than the kids.

MONEY FOR OLD ROPE
By Matthew Johnson

Finally Advertising!

OK so you have the great Loot Bag and the great sales pitch now don’t forget to advertise yourself. A Loot Bag is a great way to distribute cleverly disguised marketing material to the kids; after all they are all like little agents….right! You are counting on them to tell their parents they want you at their birthday party.

My coloring sheets and magic play money contain my website and telephone number. I want to make sure they know this though and I also want to make sure they tell their parents. Here is how I do it. At the end of the show I describe the contents of the bag to the children, something like this:

Magician: “OK kids before the show ends and before you all go home I want to tell you all something really cool!

Billy’s Mom and Dad called me up yesterday and said Magic Guy we want all of Billy’s friends to be little Magicians so they asked me to bring you all special gifts which they paid $8000 each for, I know unbelievably thoughtful and generous!

So boys and girls you are all going to get a special magic bag full of all the things you need to be a great magician.

You will also notice some paper play money in the bag that has my telephone number and website on it. You want to take that, show it to your parents and tell them you saw the best magician in the world at Billy’s birthday party. Then you tell them you would like it very much if they would pin the money to the fridge with a fridge magnet so they know where to find me on your birthday……SHAMELESS PLUG!”

Usually I will also ask a child when their birthday is at which point I will say “As luck would have it I have some availability on that day!”

Final thoughts

Well, there it is my friends, a complete guide to selling Loot Bags.

For the past two years now I have continually and successfully managed to sell Loot Bags to about 90% of my customers and that means allot of extra money coming my way. I truly hope you can adopt the Magic Loot Bag theme and make it work for you too.

So here is to your bags full of Loot!

ROMHANYS PICKS OF THE WEEK

With so much come in to Hocus-Pocus this week it has been hard to chose.

Micro Devil's Reflection by Peter Loughran

I am a fan of Peter Loughran, he has produced some pretty incredible and off-beat routines. Having seen the original and larger version of this I was so pleased when I discovered he was releasing the micro version. As with anything Peter puts out, he has spent a lot of time working and performing this, making sure all the bugs are worked out, and he has produced a high quality product. Forget all the other versions of silk through glass, this one is far superior and anybody wanting to add that something special to your repertoire will definitely want to invest in this mini illusion.

Peter Loughran's famous mirror Penetration that has mystified audiences and baffled magicians for years has now been built in a micro size! Introducing Peter Loughran's Micro Devil's Reflection!

EFFECT:

The performer introduces a beautiful mirror frame and a solid mirror. The mirror is handed out for inspection. The solid mirror is now inserted into the mirror frame. A silk is introduced and amazingly the silk begins to melt right through the mirror as the entire illusion is spun around 360 degrees. The silk is moved around the mirror seemingly healing its path as it travels. Finally the silk is pulled completely through the front of the mirror.

Now a white drop cloth is placed in front of the mirror with a back light switched on, it is impossible to move the mirror inside the frame in ANY DIRECTION without detection and light shining through. Yet the performer thrusts his entire hand and arm right through the solid mirror. The white drop cloth is instantly pulled away showing the mirror still in place and completely solid. The mirror is removed and may be examined again!

ABOUT THE MICRO DEVIL'S REFLECTION:

The Micro Devil's Reflection is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, and is built for not only performers but also collectors of fine magic. This illusion is hand crafted out of wood with all custom made hardware, gimmickry and features custom aluminum trim finishing the base. Even the ' L ' brackets are custom made out of polished aluminum, and no details have been over looked. The mirror is made of Acrylite-Plus Plexiglas, the strongest and most scratch resistant Plexiglas in the world. The entire illusion has been built to swivel 360 degrees on point, and is a dream in operation. The illusion requires virtually no mechanical skill whatsoever and can be learned in minutes, leaving all of your time for rehearsal or for simply admiring the craftsmanship and the quality of the prop.

OTHER FEATURES:
The illusion can be done dramatically slow or lightning fast
Other objects may be passed through the mirror
The illusion can be rotated 360 degrees on point
The illusion packs flat for traveling and sets up in only 2 minutes
The illusion is high quality, hand crafted, durable and light weight
Virtually no mechanical skill required
The mirror is examinable before and after the illusion
Glimpses of the mirror, showing it still in place below, can be seen as your hand is completely through the solid mirror.
The entire illusion packs flat for traveling and only requires 2 nuts and bolts to put it all together, allowing you to set it up in less than 2 minutes. It comes with a mini back light, custom white drop cloth, silk, base, Plexiglas mirror, mirror frame, and instructions. In addition each one is numbered and plated for authenticity.

Entire illusion packs flat. Quality craftsmanship built for performers and collectors. The illusion that has mystified audiences and baffled magicians can now be yours!

Ultimate Work DVD Set by Tony Giorigo

This truly is the Ultimate Work on gambling by one of the worlds leading authorities. Here is a DVD that every magician should have in their library. It's a fantastic resource for applying these gambling techniques to magic. This is more than worth the asking price.

A visual treatise on handmucking, or the arcane art of the hold-out man, photographed with state of the art High-Definition video cameras.

Tony Giorgio, the man who appears in this set of two DVDs, reveals the authentic sleight of hand employed by hold-out men. Tony Giorgio spent more than 20 years in the demimonde of card and dice hustlers.

During those years, he met and broke bread with literally hundreds of handmuckers, machine men, bust-out men, steers, front-men, spot finders, two-dealers, cellar-dealers, spreaders, cold-deckers, run-up men, check coppers, paper-players, painters, scratch players, slick sleeve and bean shooter players from Portland, Maine south to Miami Beach, Florida, west to California and north to Alaska.

Tony Giorgio played cards across the United States, on the Canadian prairies, in Cuba before the revolution and in the cantinas of Mexican border towns. He .moved. in private clubs, private games, floating games, athletic clubs, poolrooms, card rooms and casinos. He moved on the unsophisticated and the sophisticated.

Tony Giorgio played poker with the hoi-polloi, blue collar workers, rodeo riders and cowboys in Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming and Arizona; with miners in Montana, longshoremen with grappling hooks in their belts and New Orleans pimps sporting pearl-handled pistols. He played in limit-games for pocket change and in games played for high stakes. During his travels and play, he learned from the top hold-out men in the world and invented and used many of his own moves which he now reveals.

On these DVDs, which run over two hours, Tony Giorgio demonstrates and teaches the Machine Break and his many original variations. He shows never before exposed CARD-STEALS. There are heretofore unrevealed BLACKJACK and HOLE CARD-SWITCHES, MULTIPLE CARD SWITCHES, explanations and demonstrations of CAPPING THE DECK, CAPPING TO THE BOTTOM, CLEANING-UP, SPREADING DOWN, or PLAYING THE BRUSH. In great detail, GIORGIO teaches the ploy of playing with an extra card and MULTIPLE METHODS of cleaning it up (getting rid of the extra card).

There are lengthy discussions and demonstrations of the art of concealment and the attitudes that allay suspicion. You will see and learn the moves that get the money.

You will view every use of card palming in advantage play and its application to the art of magic.

The moves and methods shown in THE ULTIMATE WORK DVDs are not magicians. versions, or the purportedly authentic moves presented by the countless ersatz gambling experts who inhabit the world of magic.

THE ULTIMATE WORK is not sold to teach card cheating. It is intended to show how the art of the card mechanic can be applied to the art of magic.

Color Changing Rose by Gerald le Guilloux

There are color changing roses and then there is this version by Gerlad Le Guilloux. I have always loved the idea of adding a color changing rose to my show. My wait has been worthwhile. Here is something that might be overlooked by many, and in some ways I'm glad because I will be adding this to my own show. It's a very visual piece of magic and done at the right moment can create a very pretty and magical effect. If you want to add a bit of class to your act then this could be for you.

Elegance. Class. Beauty. All these features added to your act with a single effect: the Color Changing Rose!

Effect:

A rose visually changes from one color to another, and your hand can be shown empty after the effect.

Features of this effect and method:

* Easy to perform
* No magnets
* Visual effect designed for stage
* You finish clean
* Rose hand made in France

Remarkable Card Magic DVD by Boris Wild

Boris Wild is one of the most creative and original magicians out there today. His marked deck is very popular as well as his three card monte routine. This jam packed three set DVD has become one of my top DVD sets that has been released in the past year. Highly recommended.

In this specially boxed 3-DVD set, FISM award-winner Boris Wild is one of the most renowned French magicians in the world. From Hollywood and Las Vegas to Monte Carlo, Sydney, Tokyo and beyond, Boris’ original and creative approach to card magic has taken him to some of the most prestigious venues on five continents where he has received standing ovations.

Now, it’s your turn to watch and learn Boris Wild’s favorite creations as he reveals them for the very first time on video in this amazing DVD set. You’ll witness astounding, truly miraculous card magic using his outstanding, world-famous BW Marked Deck. Boris will teach you every single detail of his ingenious system as well as incredibly clean routines that will fool you badly and, after you learn them, will leave your audiences shaking their heads!

One of them, Pure Telepathy, is considered by international experts to be “one of the most beautiful and theatrical card revelations in the world.” You’ll also learn the wonderfully deceptive Kiss Count, in addition to many highly-visual applications using this new technique. There’s a colorful combination of cards and silks set to music, a spectator’s kiss on an impossible journey to a signed card, and a fantastic, multi-phase routine combining All Backs, Triumph and Wild Card!

These three DVDs also feature a super-clean revelation of a thought-of card in mid-air, a unique prediction of a movie, plus Boris’ best-selling effects including Miracolor, his diabolical Wild Monte, Very Wild!, and WPT, two eye-popping transformations of cards that will knock you dead. And there’s more…!

The performances are fun and entertaining to watch and the secrets behind it all do not require difficult sleight of hand. The moves, principles and methods rely mostly on subtlety and cleverness. Boris explains everything in detail with clear step-by-step instructions, valuable tips, a pinch of theory, and in-depth psychological aspects in their own dedicated segment.
