Well, we are back on dry land after a whirlwind trip to perform in Venice and Croatia. I must admit that these are two of our favorite places on earth, offering so much beauty, history and culture. Every time I go back I fall in love with them again.
There is always something happening when we travel. This time, when we arrived in Venice we found out the hotel they had apparently booked was not booked at all! We had just flown about 24 hours and were tired and hungry. We got a taxi to the hotel we were given in the contract by my agent, a room was not booked and they were full. After a call to my agent in London and about a two hour wait, the hotel took pity on us both and found us a spare room. They were turning people away while we sat there waiting. At least everything turned out okay, the shows went very well and we were able to stop in Toronto on the way home.

BLAINE AND CHRIS ANGEL
Because of my work schedule I was unable to get caught up in the hype of this weeks magic on TV. It sounds like the Blaine special was a success - even though it also seems like it was one big Infomercial. I was amazed to find out when I returned that a lot of the magic Blaine performed went on sale after the show. I guess, at least for magicians, when people ask if you can perform those tricks like Blaine you can say yes. Actually anybody can, just buy them at a magic shop. To be honest, they are fantastic effects and I will review one or two of my favorites that came in to Hocus-Pocus. I am sure if Chris Angel didn't rely heavily on stooges and camera editing a lot of the magic he performed for TV would be on sale. Bottom line of course is that it's all marketing and building up hype, plus it's good for magic. Get's the word out there with the public. Majority of people can't afford Blaine or Angel so they might just hire YOU. Whether you like them or not, they are helping magic.
I only wish Copperfield had sold some of his magic after his show, because his stuff was brilliant!! I would have bought the Laser sawing illusion - probably have had to get another mortgage though.
I've been thinking about where magic has been the past few years. David Blaine has kept it alive with street magic and Chris Angel followed in David's footsteps, but I really think it's time we had another Copperfield. I'm still a huge Copperfield fan, he has done more for magic than people give him credit for. If you watch his TV specials you'll realise just how good he was ... and still is! It's time, however, for a young illusionist to get back on stage, like Copperfield, and put together a show that is up there with his, and make it a regular event. Somebody needs to try and pitch this. Of course, it needs to be a performer who has their own unique style, and not trying to copy David Copperfield, but I think it's time and am suprised nobody is working on this.
REVIEW OF GREG FREWIN ILLUSION SHOW
If you want see a really great magic show, and somebody who obviously loves their craft and is a master, then you must visit the Greg Frewin Theater in Niagra Falls (Canada). On our way home from overseas, Natalie and I went to the show. It is a large theater, designed with table seating so you can also enjoy a meal. We were lucky enough to get front row seats, what an experience! I felt like a kid again. It was jam packed with some classic magic effects plus many of Greg's original illusions and of course several tigers!! When the white tiger walked past me and looked straight in to my eyes I almost 'pooped' my pants!! What a thrill.
The show started off with Greg's winning FISM act where he vanishes the doves at the end and produces a girl - really amazing. What blew me away was the fact he was doing his dove act WITHOUT a jacket!! Just a long sleeved normal shirt. You felt as though he could walk down the street and just produce doves. Every dove worker should see his show and watch him work - he's truly one of the best out there. Personally for me, that part of the show was the highlight, simply because I'd seen it on TV so many times, but to be so close and watch him work was a thrill. From here he went through several major illusions including several productions of tigers. His levitation routine was unbelievable. Not only did the lady float up, but he walked through her, which threw me right off guard. She then continued floating up and Greg flew up to her. I had never seen this before and the audience loved it.
Greg's version of the Origami box is the best I've seen, where he cracks the mirror and uses three broken pieces instead of the swords. His professionalism shines through in everything he does. The audience enjoyed the close-up sequences and he included a few standard effects upfront while they set the scenes behind the curtain.
Overall, a first rate show and I highly recommend this to everybody who is in that part of the world. Perhaps Greg can pitch this show to TV and be the new Copperfield. I certainly think he'd be able to pull it all off.

The phantom of our Opera House
This is a great story about Hypnotist Paul Royter from Canada. I had the pleasure of working with Paul in Singapore. This is from a recent tour he did in New Zealand.

An unexplained flickering of lights at the Royal Wanganui Opera House has tipped Canadian hypnotist Paul Royter further toward believing in ghosts.
He thinks there was a ghost present, and that it objected to being hypnotised.
Mr Royter performed at the opera house on Tuesday night, to raise funds for a children'soundation. The lights, dimmed as the hypnotic state was induced, started flickering on and off for no known reason.
Opera house manager John Richardson said the flickering must be due to a technical fault. He wouldn't comment on the ghost explanation.
But Mr Royter said odd things happen under hypnotism.
"Your conscious mind goes to sleep and your subconscious mind takes over."
The flickering of dimmed lights was "the oddest that I have ever experienced" he said.
"I don't go around and say that there's ghosts, but I certainly believe that it's possible."
While in Wanganui Mr Royter was told that a 16-year-old virtuoso violinist performing at the opera house heard footsteps following him around the theatre.
"He was so shaken that it took several people to calm him down."
Opera House technician Fred Holmes doesn't know about the violinist. But what happened to the lights on Tuesday night was definitely odd.
"We had some lights come on that were not programmed to come on."
He would be loath to relate the Wanganui ghost to a specific person. But he said one candidate was a female dancer, who died after her dress caught fire during a performance in the early 1900s.
Another possibility identity for the ghost is Frank Sayring, a 57-year-old opera house technician who died there in February 1956.
His daughter-in-law, Rona Sayring, recalls that he suffered a heart attack during the first performance of the year and was dead by the time he arrived at hospital.
"He worked in most of the theatres in Wanganui. He was a projectionist," Mrs Sayring said.
"He loved the theatre very much, loved the shows."

BRAND NEW EFFECT THIS WEEK
Here is a routine that I am very proud to release this week through www.hocus-pocus.com. It's the perfect routine for pretty much any working condition, whether it be stage, street or cabaret type work. When I was twenty, that's twenty years ago now, I read 13 Steps to Mentalism. It changed my life as I developed a passion for that area of performing. One of my favorite routines included a prediction type effect where the magician was able to predict three different chosen raffle ticket numbers. The only problem with the method was it used a person offstage to do all the 'dirty' work. Over time I developed, and started performing three different versions. All of them worked just as good as the other and each one still bringing about a very strong reaction from the audience. In this new released I show you how to go about making up all three versions, which would only take about five minutes and less than a few dollars to put together. Remember, I perform for a living, so everything I release is from the real-world working arena. There are no fly by night ideas or things I just put out because they come to mind. These are audience tested routines that have gone through literally thousands of shows.
The effect for the first two routines, is that you bring out a prediction which is handed to a member of the audience. At some stage in your act, you hand out a bowl of real raffle tickets, say two to three hundred. They can be examined as they are not faked in any way. Three different people each choose a ticket and the numbers on their winning tickets match the numbers inside the prediction. At the end I like to hand out prizes to the three winners.
The third version, you can have the prediction written inside a sealed envelope. Actually, this could even be posted out prior to the show in a sealed envelope. This is NEVER touched by you again. A bowl of raffle tickets are handed out to the audience, they remember their numbers and all FIVE winning tickets match the winning numbers in the sealed envelope. This has so many possibilities for street magicians to stage workers. Again, if you have a prize to give out, it just adds more fun to the routine.
What I really love about this, is that it packs small, yet plays very big. As TC Tahoe said, when you read the manuscript;"Minimum props for maximum entertainment".
There are NO refills to buy, you can get all the props for less than $3.00 and have yourself a routine you will perform in EVERY show! This is one of my pet routines I've been keeping back, but the time has come to share it with the magic community.

The magician shows a gift box and talks about how he bought this gift for his 4-year-old niece for her upcoming birthday. He then talks about coincidences and wants to try an experiment. JOE GIVAN'S RING IN GUMBALL MACHINE
I know I've talked about this before, but Hocus-Pocus just got a few more in, so if you want one you should order because they go as quickly as they come in! I really love this effect and routine. I won't review all the items, because you can make your own mind up after watching the video demos and seeing Blaine perform them. However, here are two of my all time favorites and probably the strongest of all the routines in the Blaine series.

The magician invites an audience member up to help with his new version of a popular magic trick. Displaying a cardboard produce box of fruit, the magician removes one lemon and one orange and places them on the ring holders on the side of the table...
The volunteer's shoe is removed and placed inside the cardboard box which is then joined by the two pieces of fruit. The fruit is to be used to "eat away the bad odor," apparently coming from the shoe. The magician shakes the box with fruit and shoe, removes the lemon, removes the orange and removes the...oopps! The shoe has disappeared and the box is torn open to show it is empty!
In an attempt to compensate for the missing shoe, the magician blows up a balloon to give to the helper, but it quickly deflates and visually transform into a matching color silk hanky! The hanky is used to cover the lemon and then whisked away to show the lemon has vanished! The hanky is then used to cover the orange and it too is whisked away to show the orange has, ooops, it's still there. The orange is cut open to to reveal the previously vanished lemon inside! The lemon is cut open to show the previously vanished balloon. The balloon is inflated placed on the table where it pops with a loud burst revealing the audience member's shoe!!!!!

RAZOR SHOTS
I finally got to perform this routine this past week while overseas. What an incredible reaction and fooled everybody - including my wife who of course had never seen me perform it before. Completely fooled her, so that in itself says something. This routine is so well thought out, there is no way I would have figured out when the 'switch' occurs. The basic effect is the magician shows a sharp razor blade, swallows it and follows that down with a 'shot' and some salt and a squeeze of lime. This happens four times, finally the magician takes out some dental floss, swallows some of that, and then brings back the razor blades attached to the dental floss.
This is super easy to perform, it takes a little practice, but not much. This means you can really work on presentation. This routine comes complete with written manuscript, gimmick blades and even shows you how to make your own, so you no longer have to buy refills from a magic dealer! Also comes with the special shot glasses and floss. If you've ever thought about adding something really cool to your act, this could be the perfect item. I can see all types of performers using this, from street magicians to cabaret and corporate performers. Peter The Adequate has really put a lot of thought in to this routine and this is, in my humble opinion, the best version yet. After reading the instructions I put it in to practice and loved it. I can see why they say this is Blaine's favorite effect. This is a revised routine of an effect that is so old many have forgotten about it - until now. You show someone a batch of twenty cards... all different. You give her ten of the cards to hold. You now have her just think of one of the remaining ten cards. She never says a word. No one except her knows what card she’s thinking of. These ten cards are counted again. Strangely... there are now only nine.
The one card she’d been thinking of has vanished! She’s still only thinking of her card… it’s never been named out loud! She counts the other ten cards she’s been holding… ten cards you haven't touched since the beginning. But now she has eleven cards!
