Finally a home!!

After arriving back in New Zealand, Natalie and I have been looking at various areas we would like to live. We finally decided upon a great area that we know well, and ended up buying a home there. Final paper work will be signed off in March.

Since being back we've had some lovely visits with magic friends. Still lots more people to catch up with, and hopefully once we settle down a bit more we'll have some time to do that.

I am just putting finishing touches on Performing Mentalism for Young Minds Volume 2. This book will be BIGGER than the first and contain more routines. I just received a fantastic routine from Bill Abbott for the book as well as Andrew Gerard, so it's about to be sent for editing. While the title is Performing for Young Minds I must say that many of the routines can easily be adapted for older people (with young minds).

Next week the blog might be late as I'm overseas performing, but I'll try and do something if time permits.

Here is an article I wrote recently about performing silently. While this is based on my work as Chaplin I also perform another two different shows - a full evening mentalism show and another comedy show which are 'chaplinesque' in style but not Chaplin.

Being able to perform without saying a word is an art within itself. Over the past twenty five years I’ve developed a full evening silent show, as well as being able to do a evening of walk-about magic as a silent character. Being able to perform silently requires a lot of work and thought in to the performance. When I finish an evening show I am completely drained.

An exercise: This is something everybody gets to participate in when they take my “Visual Comedy” Workshops at conventions, and it is something you can do at home. Take ONE effect you enjoy performing (let’s say it’s the Ambitious Card routine). Now go out and perform it without saying a word. You will find you will start to develop certain skills that make this work. Imagine having to ask somebody to chose a card without actually speaking? If you just ‘go through the moves’ the effect will be incredibly boring and you will lose your audience quickly. However, if you ‘perform’ and use facial expressions, mime techniques, humour etc you will actually draw people in to your performance.

The ability to perform in a crowd without speaking is very powerful. One of the advantages of having a walk-about show like this is that you could work in a very noisy bar and still do all of your material.

Here are SEVEN TIPS FOR PERFORMING SILENT – these can be applied to both close-up/walk-around and stand-up/stage magic.

CHARACTER

Having a deep understanding of the ‘character’ you are playing in the performance is vital to your success. If you get the chance to study or take drama/acting courses I highly recommend this. If we look at characters in in a story, they are interwoven with the plot of the drama. Each character in a play has a personality of its own and has a distinct set of principles and beliefs. The actors who play the roles have the very important responsibility of bringing the characters to life. As a silent performer you also will be developing a ‘character’ – it may be an extension of yourself, or in my case, a well known celebrity. The minute my mustache goes on I am ‘in character’ – I become Charlie Chaplin. Every move, nuance and gesture has been studied and placed at a certain point for a reason.

MUSIC

For me personally, music is one of the most important aspects of my entire stage show. My background is in music and I spent most of my life studying and performing music. I know, within a few bars (music bars not the drinking kind) if a piece of music will work for a certain routine. Music can also help drive your character and keep you focused during your performance. It can also be used to create atmosphere and highlight certain points throughout your show. My signature routine is my Floating Broom. I know when I perform this that there will not be a dry eye in the house. Even my eyes aren’t dry because of the emotion of the song and what I am creating on stage. I use music to take people on a journey of highs and lows. For anybody who has studied the classic Chaplin movies such as The Gold Rush or The Kid, you will know that Chaplin takes his audience on an amazing journey where one minute you are laughing and the next you are crying. When people leave my show I want them to have experienced something similar – and music plays a major role in this.

An exercise: This is a great way to see if a piece of music will fit the ‘mood’ and effect you are trying to create. If you find a piece of music you like, play it to different family members and friends, asking them what pictures the music brings to their minds. For example, if you play something that makes them think of danger and death – then you know it won’t fit your flower production sequence.

MIME

Probably an obvious one – but having some basic skills of mime is very important. A good mime artist learns how to connect with an audience, and make them believe. When you think about it, a mime actually is speaking, but without saying a word. They are visually connecting with their audience, and as a magician you are doing the same. Just putting on some music and standing there performing a Three Ring Routine doesn’t do anything for your audience. By using MIME techniques you can draw that audience in and have them believe the rings really do link and unlink. I watched a VERY interesting documentary on television the other day. It showed Penn & Teller performing their ‘Clear Cups and Balls’ Routine. They showed the routine to people without showing Tellers face – just the hands – and everybody saw the loads. They then showed the routine WITH Teller’s face and nobody caught the loads. They then realized that the face played a major role in fooling the audience. A great lesson for us all here, especially if you are performing silently.

THE PLOT

To create even a 12 minute silent act the show needs A PLOT. A plot is the order of events occurring in a play. Again I will mention taking people on a journey. A plot is the basic storyline that is narrated throughout a play. Cirque du Soleil are the perfect example of creating a storyline or plot for an entire show without using any dialogue. The entertainment one derives from a play depends largely on the sequence of events that occur in the story. The logical connection between the events and the characters (who enact the story) forms an integral part of the plot of drama. This can be on two levels, from an individual effect to the overall plot of the your show. I like my show to have structure, like any good story, with a beginning, middle and end.

BELIEF

As magicians we are trying to convince people that we have the ability to do things that muggles can not. If we don’t believe in it ourselves then we can’t expect our audience to buy in to it. I’m not suggesting I actually believe that I can float a broom – however when it comes time for the performance, in my mind I forget about the mechanics and believe the broom is floating. When I perform a coins across I forget that I have a shell coin, and each time one travels from one hand to the other I believe it is for real. It helps SELL my performance. Acting is all about believe and creative imagination. It is an alternative life. The audience is only going to believe that you are indeed the person you are playing (a magician) if you yourself believe that you are that person. To go from who YOU are to who you are ONSTAGE is a process. It will take creative imagination and belief.

MIND AND BODY

This will seem like an odd one, but I firmly believe that to pull off a great silent performance you need to be at the top of your game both physically and mentally. An actor must cultivate his mind and body as an instrument in portraying roles. His mind needs to be able to grasp things as astutely as a philosopher and his body must be able to portray a range of emotions. As I mentioned earlier, during a silent performance your mind will work a lot harder. You will need to concentrate more on ALL aspects of your performance.

ENJOY

Last, but by no means least, is that you enjoy the process of developing a silent act. If you enjoy it, and have passion this will come through to your audience who will go a long the journey with you. Get involved in various drama groups, read as much as you can, get out there and do it. One of the best things I ever did at University was to join the “TheatreSports’ Group – it’s a group of performers who improvise various scenes. Take acting lessons, get involved and above all ENJOY it!!

Peter Loughran's Creature Shock

Peter builds some of the best props in the business. As soon as I saw this I went 'FANTASTIC!' What a great idea this is, something very different in regards to a production of a rabbit. I just LOVE this. I can certainly see this being performed at a kids party or family shows and the kids going nuts over this. The idea of producing a 'gorilla' is very funny and the hand very magical. The quality as always is extremely high and built to last. If you are looking for something that is going to get great reactions this is definitely worth looking at purchasing! It opens itself up to some great story lines and routines. I must admit when I first saw this I thought it used some form of 'fake arm' or puppetry however it completely fooled me when both hands (yes BOTH) were shown!!

The performer introduces a small magical chest and explains to the audience that this chest is actually a portal or a gateway to another dimension, and this is how magicians have been making animals and objects appear in their magic acts for centuries. He will now reveal to the audience how the magical gateway works and will now demonstrate the illusion.

The performer introduces several playing cards that have different names of animals on them that a magician might produce or make appear in their magic acts, for example a Dove, Rabbit, Canary etc. He has someone in the audience select a playing card, and show everyone what they have picked. The card is shown to have the word "Rabbit" written on it.

The performer now opens the chest and shows it to be completely EMPTY. The chest is closed and then the door is opened and a rabbit is pulled out of the box just like magic! The audience is thrilled but wants to see more, so the magician offers to do it again, and this time they can select a different card.

The next card is turned over, but to the magician's horror, the card says "Gorilla". The performer seems confused and starts to utter..."What does that card say?...A Gorilla?...how the heck could a Gorilla fit inside this small...." Then before the magician has a chance to finish his sentence, the small chest starts shaking violently out of control, the front door busts open and a giant Gorilla arm comes lunging out towards the audience, and reaches for them and the magician. The magician, frantically struggles, but manages to somehow contain the beast and close the door. The chest still shaking wildly, the performer decides to ditch the prop, and move on to a much easier and less dangerous card trick.

A hilarious and action packed routine great for all ages, full of laughs and surprises, a guaranteed hit at your next show.

You can use any small animal or object that will fit inside the load area instead of a rabbit. The inside boasts a clear coat armor finish that makes it virtually stain proof and animal droppings will easily be cleaned up after each show.

You can show the box empty before the first production, and then show it again empty after the first production and before the gorilla makes its appearance. It is also possible to once again show the box empty after the gorilla has been contained.

Creature Shock is fully self contained, and requires no special clothing, just pick it up and perform it, simple as that. Sets up and Resets in about 1 minute and is very easy to do. Built like a professional illusion and tricked out in polished aluminum.

Creature Shock is very deceptive from just a couple of feet away, and great to perform up close or on stage. As individual performers, we can only be in one place at one time. When it comes to gigs, it seems like every client wants a certain date at a certain time. In the case of corporate holiday parties, here in the United States it seems as though there are a few Fridays and Saturdays that many corporate groups choose when planning their parties.

Unfortunately, if you want a prospect to continually read your newsletter each month, the Dan Kennedy "in your face" approach is wayyyyyyyy too...well, in your face! There's a way to offer your client your services in a way that is considerably more 'gentle' and besides, the purpose of the newsletter is NOT to push your services hard core...it's a maintaining contact tool so you're on the client's mind when she does need someone.

What a busy week it's been. On top of house hunting I was asked to step in and edit the New Zealand Magicians Magazine Magicana. It was a huge job but an enjoyable one. I would have easily spent over 100 hours working on this issue. I'm very pleased with the results. Magicana is the worlds oldest magic magazine - started in 1953 and goes to magicians all over the world.

I am about to fly to Hong Kong to perform my 12 minute act, then back to New Zealand and off to Sydney then back home again. In March I've had enquires from China and Japan so we'll see how they pan out. During all of this I am still busy working on Performing Mentalism For Young Minds Volume 2. It's turning in to quite the epic book.

FRANCIS B MARTINEAU passes away this week

Those of you who have been in magic a long time will know the name Francis (or Frank) Martineau. I'm sad to report Frank passed away this week in Vancouver, Canada. He was certainly a very colorful character and was incredibly creative in this thinking. He was linked to many famous magicians, and was the illustrator for Rices Encyclopedia of Magic, amongst other publications.
I got to meet Frank years ago while in Vancouver, and he lived up to everything I'd heard about him.

1922 - 2012

Canadian magician, magic illustrator and author. Best known for his amazing artistic contribution to the three-volume Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic for which he drew thousands of illustrations and hand-lettered the entire text. Also a legendary nightclub performer in the '30s-'40s-'50s, as well as the creator of Mark Wilson's Train illusion (designing the Thin Sawing Illusion in the process) and associate producer of The Magic Land of Alakazam TV program. Also designed the 1964 New York World's Fair Hall of Magic for General Cigar Co.

Here is a tribute by Reg Donnelly who knew Frank for many many years.

Anything you heard about Francis B Martineau is probably true. His personality is that of a cavalier .He does what he wants, when he wants and deals with the consequences later. Some people are too sensitive and he might rub them the wrong way; but he doesn’t worry about that. I believe that if people are talking about him, then he is happy.

I have known him for over 35 years and I have seen many magic stars open the doors wide and welcome him offering hospitality that you or I would never get. Complimentary show tickets, dinner, invitations to conventions ; these situations are not unusual for Francis . I guess it is usually respect, but sometimes they want something, advice on that new trick maybe or a new idea. The surprising thing about this is that I have seen Frank hold back when talking to a magic dealer or a pro; but sometimes when talking to an up and coming aspirant he wouldn’t hesitate to help at all. I have seen him draw an original magic trick or illusion on a placemat in a restaurant several times and give it to someone that he just met. He would then say to them that if they like it and use it that they must make two and give him one. I am not sure if anyone took him up on the offer. I do not recall him saying “look what someone sent me “. I am sure that some of the tricks that he drew were made by the recipient though.

Frank used to encourage me. His exact words were “If that ******* can work on a cruise ship then so can you.”

Francis is also a good motivator. Persuasion seems to be a hobby for him. I once saw him successfully return a pair of shoes to a department store that he had purchased about a year previously.

When if comes to magic (I guess that is why you bought this book) maybe he is the Ralph Lauren or Versace or Pierre Cardin of design. When the zig zag illusion was popular he made several variations that didn’t get built. A zig zag is just a zig zag right? Not in Martineau’s hands . He has a way of enhancing most any existing effect for the better.

Of course he has a lot of original material also as you are about to see.

This has been in my act for many years and I perform it in pretty much every single show. Every line, gag and bit of business has been put through the test on cruise ships, corporate gigs, stand-up gigs and trade shows PLUS Television for the past twenty years at least!! Actually there are TWO different handlings and both are included complete with photos and full instructions. The first version was on DVD and sold for $125.00 when it was first released several years ago. As part of the Pro-Series I wanted to add more material so have included both of the versions I currently use (depending on performing situations). As I said, in my professional career this is THE one routine that is in EVERY SINGLE show.

Work continues on Volume Two of Performing Mentalism For Young Minds
I have ALMOST completed the second volume of Performing Mentalism for Young Minds. This second version has MORE routines than the first one (if that is possible!) A friend recently told me that if he only had TWO books for mentalism these two would be the two he'd want. What people are starting to realise is that the effects can play for either adults OR children - in some cases I adapt mine to suit the audience but can work them for young kids, teenagers and adults - even on cruise ships!! It's all about how you present the effect.
This volume should be finished and then off to the Editors and hopefully out sometime in February or early March.

Hi everybody
I took a week off the Blog last week as Natalie, Jon-Paul and I were travelling. We are still on the road but heading back to Auckland early in the New Year.
While on the road I've been busy finishing up work on Performing Mentalism For Young Minds Volume 2. This volume is FILLED with over FIFTY routines for the performer who wants to add amazing routines to their kids show. After reading Volume 1 again I realised that if you were to purchase Volume one and volume two and performed every effect you would have a show that lasted several hours!!! There is SO much material in both books, but Volume 2 has even more than Volume 1.
It is always great to get emails from around the world from people who have purchased it and are sending high praise. This makes it all worthwhile.
Actually, one of the effects I performed at a twelve year old's birthday party last week and it went over extremely well - so I know that the effects being sent in by contributors really work in the real world.

Also, I was honored to read the review by Cris Johsnon. Cris writes an honest review and so when he reviews my books and products I know he will be honest. Check out his BLOG from the Hocus-Pocus main website.

Christmas is now over and we had the most amazing time with our new-born son who now is 3.5 months old. Our first Christmas was a great one and will only get better each year. Here's a photo I took yesterday and couldn't resist including it in this weeks BLOG.

There has been some really great magic come in to Hocus-Pocus this week but I'll hold of until the New Year to continue with my favourites ....

We are SLOWLY settling in here to New Zealand - all of our possessions are still in storage until we find exactly where we want to live. Hopefully it won't be too long now.

I want to wish everybody a fantastic Christmas and Happy Holidays - let's all hope that 2012 will be an amazing year for us all. I have lots of projects on the go as well as gigs on ships lined up and other bits and pieces.

This week I went in to do a spot of filming for a TV show here in New Zealand that will be aired next week. It was an interview and guest appearance where I performed a very quick Multiplying Bottles. I used the bottles from Hocus-Pocus because they look amazing on TV. To the point where the host wanted to take a bottle home - he thought they were that real! These are exclusive to www.hocus-pocus.com

Speaking of Multiplying Bottles - the RUM BOTTLES have all sold out but Reg Donnelly has been busy making more. SOOOO - if you have ordered them they will be ready in a few days time. Remember, these are VERY limited bottles and they LOOK AMAZING!!! If mine werent' being shipped down on our shipment from Vancouver I would have used those on the TV show.

While in Vancouver we had this amazing photo taken with our little boy Jon-Paul. This Santa was really the best I've ever seen! He was as close as Edmund Gwenn on Miracle on 34th Street as you could get.
Here is our sons first Santa experience - it will be hard to top finding one like this.

Arrived in New Zealand

After a very long flight we arrived safe and sound in New Zealand from Vancouver. Our little 3 month old boy did incredibly well and slept most of the flight. We even got to catch up on movies we wanted to see!!

We are slowly getting settled although still not sure where we want to live. I am pleased to say I have already started to book work which was quick considering I've only been in New Zealand less than a week!! Seems like the agents are happy I'm back. I have already started taking some cruise ship work so all is looking good.

I first met Martyn a few years back while I was a guest at a convention in the UK. Martyn instantly became my favorite illusionist. Why? Because he brings comedy to illusions. He is such a funny guy and has a very refreshing and highly entertaining twist to everything he performs. I think I"m his no. 1 fan!

I absolutely LOVE this effect made by Peter Loughran. Looking for a really different ending for a bill to unusual place this has to be it! The method is fantastic and the quality of props are first rate. This is a fresh approach and extremely commercial with lots of entertainment value. It's an electronic marvel and super easy to perform. This is something I can easily see quite a few magicians adding to their act - myself included!
The electronic animated ATM drawing board

Effect: The performer introduces a white dry erase marker board on a swivel stand, with a black cloth draped over the top portion of the board hiding a drawing underneath.

The performer invites a volunteer up on stage and asks to borrow a dollar bill of ANY denomination. The performer asks the volunteer to sign the front or back of the bill (or both) so that they will be able to recognize their bill if they were to see it again.

The performer tells them they are going to magically burn their bill in an envelope and then restore the ashes and bring their bill back to life.

The Performer inserts the signed bill into an envelope and lights it on fire, but the trick goes horribly wrong, and the performer tells the volunteer that the bill is lost forever. "But not to worry", says the magician, he tells the volunteer he can write him a check.

The performer uncovers the drawing board revealing a blank check drawn on the board with a marker. The performer fills out the check to the volunteer's name in the amount of the denomination of the bill that was burned. He takes the board out of the swivel stand and offers the board to the volunteer, and says that the bank should accept this marker board as legal tender.

The volunteer is unsatisfied, so the performer replaces the marker board into the stand, and erases the check, and says "I have a better idea". The performer then draws on an ATM machine complete with a black line on the side to swipe your card and a computer screen, money dispenser and key pad.

The performer takes out his bank card and pretends to swipe it through the black line on the side of the drawing board. Nothing happens. The performer looks puzzled and says "Oh that's right, it needs to process" he then writes the words "Processing....Please Wait..." on to the screen of the ATM drawing.

The performer steps away and then magically all by itself the ATM comes to life and a receipt suddenly spits out of the hand drawn money dispenser, followed by the borrowed SIGNED bill!

Paul Romhany present Donnelly's Multiplying Rum Bottles

Quite some time ago Reg Donnelly made up a set of White Rum multiplying Bottles. He told a few people about them and all of them loved the idea. I loved them so much I asked Reg if he could make me up a set. In my book Multiplying Bottles, there was an idea where the glasses vanished and became coke cans. Reg took this idea and really made it easier to perform. This gave the entire Multiplying Bottles routine a real surprise ending! I took the bottles and performed it to a famous song "Rum n' Coca Cola" after finding a hip-hop version. Reg finally decided to market his bottles and a limited set is now available to the magic fraternity. He has done an incredible job. Ghostly Linking Finger Ring by Joe Porper

I've been a huge fan of Linking Finger Rings for many years and perform it in my stand-up show. It's probably the strongest piece of magic anybody could ever present. These rings by Joe Porper really have made the effect much easier to perform. What makes these different is the way they link and un-link, making it much easier and faster. I've switched to this set of rings myself (you only need one but comes with a 'real one'). I just find this much less of a hassle than the standard ring, although it was never really a problem I think if something makes it much easier then that is what you should use. Here I am with the incredible Vitaly Beckman after his show

Last night I was invited to see a performance that will stay in my memory for as long as I live. The last time I felt like this was the very first time I saw a magician when I was eight! Last night at this show that feeling came back and I felt like a kid again!

I saw a one man theatrical performance by Vitaly Beckman, who resides now in Vancouver Canada. He is not known at all to the local magicians here - and that's probably a good thing as he is not influenced at all by other magicians. Imagine seeing a show that is 70 minutes of the most original, clever, theatrical and thought provoking magic you can imagine. This show had it all. One of the reasons Vitaly got a standing ovation last night was his incredible stage charm. He didn't come out as a know it all magician, but somebody who saw wonderment in the world, and turned it in to magic.

The minute he appeared on stage you were drawn in by his charm and charisma. His magic and mentalism was something else - the production aspect was a lesson to everybody in how to incorporate music to really enhance a performance.

There were so many highlights but here are a few (words won't do this justice):

He opened with a floating spoon that reminded me of Copperfield's flying! - but with a spoon - it instantly got the audience and was a thing of beauty. He had ideas that really made this seem like we were witnessing something incredible.

Vitaly is obviously influenced by art as he had some wonderful set pieces where paintings came to life, drawings came to life off a page, photographs came to life - some of the most incredible and impossible magic I have ever witnessed.

One of the highlights for me included an escape routine that took an escape to another level. One of the reasons the show was a huge success was the fact that he connected his stories with the audience. He took us on an emotional journey. The 70 minute show flew by and he got a well deserved standing ovation.

I can easily say this was one of the greatest magic experiences I have ever had - and felt like a kid again discovering magic for the very first time.

The Impossible Box by Ray Roch

I can comment on this because I have seen this performed LIVE and have started performing this myself. The effect is extremely visual and has HUGE potential. Basically you bring out six cards that are pre-folded in a special way - within a few seconds the audience sees you make a simple box. The box can then be placed down and made to move slowly or float (under your control), then take the lid off and produce a lemon or a ball. If you are doing special promotions or trade-shows I would give away the box as they are easy to make up. Once you make one up you'll realise how to make more and have them ready.

For walk around work this is an amazing routine and something VERY different.

Preparing for the BIG MOVE

It's a very hectic time around here at the moment. Thursday was taken up all day with filming a new project featuring Michael Afshin - this is for the release of his amazing coin routine Menage a 3. I have talked about it in the past and we had the prototype coins made but they weren't up to the high quality we had hoped for. So we had to completely scrap that particular coin and decided to go with the original International coins. We are very excited because we now have one of the best gimmick coin makers in the business making the special coins - none other than Roy Kueppers.
Roy has been making gimmick coins and other speciality items for some of the most popular names in magic. I got to meet Roy at the recent PCAM Convention in Vancouver and showed him the routine. He wanted to get on board and so after several months it's almost there!

This week I re-shot the entire DVD with these new coins and they are absolutely amazing. I'm so pleased we made the decision to scrap the other coins and go with these - it really does make a huge difference. Too often you see products come on the market that haven't been tested or are simply released for the sake of releasing a product. It has always been my goal to produce top quality magic, and magic that has come from years of performing.

It's an incredible act that is perfect for close-up as well as stage - I am learning it so I can perform it on the cruise ships in my stage act with a camera filming me and projecting it on the large screen. It will have a HUGE impact with the audience. It's an extremely well thought out and very creative routine from start to finish.

PREPARING FOR THE BIG MOVE
In a few weeks time Natalie, myself and Jon-Paul will be flying back to set up base again in New Zealand. It's a long journey - 14 hours - but with a 2 month old baby has a few more challenges. What an amazing collection this is. I grew up watching this on TV and it was one of my all time favourite shows. This is the COMPLETE series and has a special bonus pen.
Just acquired from a private collector. What a great find!

This is a 12 DVD COMPLETE set of the 21 episodes of "The Magician" TV series recorded from the original broadcasts, complete with commericals!

The video was recorded "off the air" on 3/4 inch professional tape. This high quality conversion to DVD has been done with love and care to perserve the image as best as possible, however, there are some minor flaws due to the age of the tape and it's natural decay. The Bonus Pilot Episode is the only one that is restored from a backup made on VHS. It was, however, color-corrected and enhanced.

You will enjoy these lost treasured episodes of Television history. Take a trip back in time, and experiece THE MAGICIAN as it was originally meant to be seen!

It's been a busy week as I have just finished work on an amazing new effect by Vancouver based magician Ray Roch. It's called The Impossible Box.

Have you ever thrown away your cards and thought, "I wish there was something I could do with these?" Ray Roch has spent years developing his full seven minute close-up Impossible Box act. In the act Ray takes out six playing cards and builds a small box. For the next seven minutes incredible things happen to the box including it coming to life, the production of a lemon, signed card to box, production of other objects including dice, a drink of whiskey, golf balls and large die!

This has been part of Ray's staple close-up set - as well as walkabout entertainment. The wonderful thing about this routine is that everything can be handed out at the end. If you want to produce a gift then the box by itself is a novel item - but have the spectator open the lid and receive another free gift (you can load anything inside using Ray's special techniques).

Our little boy is now 7 weeks old this week. What an amazing thrill to have this young soul look at you and rely on you for everything. Both Natalie and I are absolutely loving being parents.

Welcome to this weeks Magic Blog. Major news out of New Zealand. We WON the World Cup Rugby this past week - what a great time to be in New Zealand - well it would be if I was there. We leave from Canada back to New Zealand at the end of November. It's been a very busy time here as we get ready for the big move back.

Next year New Zealand celebrates another special convention with some fantastic guests lined up including one of my all time favorite comedy magic acts Nick Lewin.

Nick Lewin quickly made a name for himself performing in America's showrooms and became a popular opening act in the Las Vegas casino market. He became a regular on the television talk show circuit in addition to his acting roles in television series including Dynasty, Kung Fu: the Legend Continues, Amazing Stories, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Trapper John MD, Perfect Strangers and Misfits of Science.

A true Miracle!

It's been a very emotional week this week. A few days ago we were told my 92 year young grandfather had lung cancer. It came as a shock to us all as he has always been very active. He never smoked or drank and up until this year would go swimming and would be outdoors working in his garden. Then today the amazing news came that they mis-diagnosed him!! He had something that showed on the X-Ray but it was fluid which they were able to get rid of!! It wasn't a tumour as they thought it was.

When something like this happens it really makes you appreciate life and to make the most of what we have. We are looking forward to heading back to New Zealand very soon and spending time with my grandfather. Our newborn son has my grandfather's name as his middle name so it really means a lot that they will get to see each other.

APPEARING PRODUCTION TRUCK BY WAYNE ROGERS

Just released this week. For as long as I've known Wayne I have seen him perform this amazing illusion under every type of working condition. He has used it in trade-shows, cabaret shows, theatre shows and for product launches. This is one of the most versatile creations Wayne has every come up with. Brick Wall in A Bag

I own one of these and can highly recommend it. It sets up within minutes (probably less!) and packs down even easier. I use it all the time when doing shows back home, and really enhances the act. This is extremely well made and easy to carry. For anybody who performs in venues where you want to have your own backdrop then this is a must. For school performers, shopping mall performers, actually almost ANYBODY can use this. I've been hired to do my show under all types of conditions, this just makes it look so much more professional. The wall itself looks really cool and gives it a stage feel.

What a very busy week it's been. Between trying to get some sleep I have been extremely busy working with a several people on a very special project. This project has been in the works for a very long time, and it's almost done!

If you have seen any of my recent video blogs you would have been introduced to the amazing coin work of Michael Afshin.

This is one of the most visual coin routines I've seen in a long time. The coins are manufactured just for this routine by Tango Magic. For the first time Afshin releases his entire six minute coin act Minage a 3. It starts off with the production of three different colored coins at fingertips, then goes in to the most visual and impossible 3 Fly I've ever seen where three different colored coins fly, at fingertips, from one hand to the other. This then leads in to a hand matrix routine and an envelope matrix where the coins vanish and end up under one envelope. This is repeated then they all end up INSIDE the envelope and everything can be handed out for examination.

This is one of the most incredible coin routines I've ever seen and comes complete with all hand crafted coins as well as three matching colored coins. I don't know the release date on this yet but no doubt you will all be seeing it out soon.

Seymour the Psychic Snake in a Basket -

Over the years I have owned several different versions of a snake basket. I have used them in my stand up shows and even had a routine I would perform in the Chaplin show. They have all been good, however I felt lacked something. I think this new version that is exclusive at www.hocus-pocus.com brings a lot of entertainment value and fills in the missing spots. For years the Snake Basket has been a staple of many performers' acts. There have been many versions marketed over the years. We felt a newer, more update version of this classic effect was needed.

The magician requests that Seymour write the name of the selected card on one of the notecards and a few moments later Seymour rises from the basket with a notecard in his mouth. The notecard is shown and it is the WRONG PREDICTION!

The performer scolds Seymour and commands him to return to the basket and try again. A few moments later, Seymour reappears with the second notecard and on it reads "I need a drink."; the performer responds by offering Seymour a drink of milk (this is good for big laughs as the milk diminishes it appears that Seymour is really drinking it).

The performer sends Seymour to his basket one more time and tells him to shuffle the cards thoroughly and find the selected card.

SUDDENLY, a burst of cards erupts from the basket and slowly but surely Seymour rises up with the chosen card in his mouth. He can even rise up a few times to acknowledge the standing ovation he will surely be given.

The video blog has proven to be a huge success - over 10,000 readers a week. My good friend Andrew Gerard gave me an amazing idea, which will be the first of it's kind in Magic. It won't be part of this blog but will be for a much larger market - and I am already getting on board some really great friends who can see the huge potential. You can have access through www.hocus-pocus.com as well as youtube once it goes ahead - this is why I'm not doing a video blog because the other project will take up all my time. What a thrill to open up this months issue of MAGIC MAGAZINE and see an article by Jamie D. Grant who did an interview with me a while back. If you don't get the hard copy of MAGIC then download it for your ipad. It's one of the best magazines I've seen for the ipad in the way it is laid out. The article talks about my world travels. It's been wonderful for the past six months to be in one place here in Vancouver. Natalie and I finally bought our tickets for the three of us to travel back to New Zealand at the end of November where we will set up a permanent base.

Linking Cigarette by Akira Fujii -

Wow!! This is one of the most visual effects I've seen in a very long time. Even after you know how it's done you still can't see how it works. Based on a very old idea using matchsticks Akira has changed it slightly by using two borrowed cigarettes. It's an extremely clever idea and perfect for that impromptu effect. Use any borrowed cigarettes. This DVD teaches everything you need to know to perform. Once you learn it you will be prepared to fool anybody anytime. The handling is 'pretty' easy - you will need to give it a bit of practice. I worked at it a few times then showed my nephew using his cigarettes (shame on him!) and he kept asking me to perform it over and over - he had no clue. This is something every magician should know how to do. I can see this easily becoming the new 'linking rubber band' craze. The effect is exactly as it looks in the promo DVD. You might think it's camera trickery - but it's not! If you've ever performed the old linking match trick then you will have somewhat of an idea how this works, but it's the handling that really sells it. I must admit I have been performing the match trick for years - and was still fooled by this!

Imagine BWave on steroids. Since I received this it's been in my wallet and I've performed it hundreds of times. Without a doubt the most amazing packet effect I've seen in a long time. The great thing about this compared to something like B Wave is that there is a FREE choice of card. Absolutely NO forcing. If they name the Queen of Hearts that is the card that is turned face up. You bring out two jokers and four face down cards. These cards can be mixed so not even you know the order of the queens. The spectator names ANY queen. They choose ANY three cards, the last one left is the card THEY chose! It's the cleanest and most direct packet type effect I've seen in a very long time and become my favourite. This is something I am carrying at all times in my wallet it's that good. I have shown several magicians here in Vancouver and they all immediately placed orders.

This is a 74 page book, part of the Pro Series Books that I am writing. This one takes a look at the well known Color Change Hanky effect. A week off

It's been such a very hectic week that I just don't have time this week for a blog or video blog. However plans are under way for a regular feature by Andrew Gerard on my Video Blog that is going to be amazing. The Real Magic Begins .....

Today's Blog is all about one thing - the birth of our son Jon-Paul Leslie Romhany. On the 17th Sept. 2011 our little boy was born weighing in at 8.2lbs. He is healthy and doing well. It's very hard to find words to describe how you feel when you go through this amazing experience and hold someone so precious in your arms.

A few weeks back marked the 200,000 reader of my weekly blog. With the addition of the Video Blog it appears that many new magicians have joined in reading and watching the blog. This will be HUGE! What a great concept - a monte style routine using pens. To make it even more exciting you have a $10,000 cheque (which you supply) -- if you fail the spectator gets the $10,000!! This really packs a punch because of the incredible amount of money on the line here. The theatrics for this could really be suspenseful making this a very dramatic effect. It's one of the most exciting routines to come out in a while and easily my favourite in quite some time. The pens do all the work so you don't have to worry about having to sign the cheque. Another busy week. I've been filming all week with Michael Afshin for a new release of his amazing coin magic. I'm putting up little 'teasers' on the video blog so you can see what I've been up to and his incredible magic. I have showed several friends and they all agree it's pure poetry. While filming Michael would easily gather a crowd and they just watch in awe. I love discovering underground performers who have devoted their lives to doing such amazing work, and then letting them shine in the magic community. This is what excites me about magic - just when I think I've seen it all I stand back and watch somebody like this.

The project at this stage will be a two DVD set (it may even go to three!) and include gimmick coins that are made just for his main routine. I have yet to film the 'main' routine but when you see it you will be blown away. There is so much bonus material on the DVD that it will keep you busy for a year. Having started the project I can tell you the material is for all levels - there is something for everybody. For the person who wants commercial magic they can perform at restaurants and walk about to the die hard coin workers who want to bust their balls learning new moves.

Congratulations to Landon Swank on America's Got Talent

Last night Landon Swank pulled off a fantastic shot on America's Got Talent. He present one of the best routines I've seen on that show - he did what needed to be done. Involved the judges, had an emotional hook by involving them and had a brilliant illusion. He is the first magician to FINALLY make it in to the top 10! As magicians we should all cheer and say well done Landon. Be great to see him get through the next round now and I'm sure I say this on behalf of all the magic community - congratulations and we wish you all the success you deserve.

Magicians and a well known Magic Chat room.

I have had some very interesting conversations recently with a few of my close friends in magic about a certain 'chat' group that is popular with many magicians. The people who are my close friends are all very positive, successful magicians - all very creative and share a passion for magic. The other thing we all have in common is that we don't belong to magic clubs, and avoid as much as possible using a popular magic chat group. There is an old joke amongst professional magicians that if you have several thousand responses on this group then you aren't out there working. And I actually think most of the problem with this group is that those who have that many postings aren't out there working, and feel frustrated at those who are. The only place out there for them to vent their anger is on the chat group, and so it has now turned in to a very negative place.
The way to solve most of the problems on these groups is to make sure people use their real names, that way they can't hide behind made up usernames. If you have something to say, and feel strongly then you should have the conviction to at least use your real name - otherwise your posting should be deleted.

Originally when that website was set up it was great - there were many professionals on there and it was a great way to communicate. Over the past few years it's become the most negative place on the internet. I know two extremely well known magicians who give lectures around the world, and both spend at least 10 minutes of their lecture telling everybody why they should not go on there.
It has turned in to a place where people try to knock others down, and magic doesn't need that. There is no brotherhood on there at all anymore.

On my travels around the world and lecturing, I have met several people who constantly contribute to this place (one is so sad he actually puts on his business card "regular writer for "The XXX XXXX".) and am always amazed at who I meet. In one case this person constantly writes on the 'business side of magic' as though they are an expert etc. and after talking to them they told me they do about 5-6 shows a year!!
Another person I met who often argues on there turned out to be a 13 year old kid! He was having shots at guys who have been full time pros for over 30 years!!

It used to be a good place for the creator such as myself to go and let others know about what we are up to, our latest creations etc. but every time you try to be positive you get knocked down. What is the answer - well I do know for a fact the answer is around the corner and I'll tell you more about that next week. There needs to be a more positive place, where all of the nonsense is not allowed - I have discovered such a place and hope to have a write up next week for everybody. I'm telling all my professional friends about it and many are joining now and loving it!!

Alan Watson emailed me to say the controversy with a local clown in Auckland and local magicians has now been sorted out with the Commerce Commission. This news is really to let all other entertainers know that you can't make false advertising on your website or in advertising without being pulled up for it. This is a lesson we can all learn from. Thankfully it's all been sorted out and I think everybody down there has calmed down.

Regarding (Cornflake the Clown) Justin Lane and his magic clone Magic Matt for making false and misleading claims on awards for publicity purposes.

The New Zealand Commerce Commission has concluded its investigation into this matter and has issued Cornflakes Magic World (Justin Lane) with a Compliance Advice Letter.

A Compliance Advice Letter informs the trader that the New Zealand Commerce Commission has received complaints, outlines the details of the complaint and informs the trader that the Commission is of
the opinion that they are at risk of breaching the Fair Trading Act 1986.

Justin has now complied with the Commerce Commissions requests and removed from all his websites, social media and promotional material items that were of concern and he also has apologised.

If you have similar problems with dishonest and misleading advertising by performers in your area or country then it is worthwhile looking at what legal channels you can pursue to have these false or misleading advertising claims removed.

Ricki Dunn's Drink Trick by Paul Romhany

This is, without a doubt, the funniest piece from my personal show. Long off the market I was able to get some more made up while here in Canada. Each unit is custom made here in Vancouver and I was able to get a few of these made up again. I had three sets myself for sale at the recent Canadian Convention and after my performance they sold immediately. This was the finish to the late Ricki Dunn's act for over 20 years, and has been in my act since he gave me his own glass before his passing. While my act does change, I can tell you this is the ONE routine that is in every single show. I would easily say this is one of the most commercial and hilarious pieces of fun on the market. The design of these glasses are slightly different than Ricki's and I changed the handling to fit every working condition. This does not work like the standard Gizmo glass - with this version the spectator can hold the glass. I have used this as a full routine both in my Chaplin act and my Stand-up comedy act - it never fails to get huge laughs.

SUGAR RUSH by Scott Alexander

This is my opinion is the Rolls Royce of the Salt Pour. If you watch my Video Blog you will see the gimmick and how amazing it is compared to any other out there. If you are looking at doing a double load at the end and finishing clean this is the perfect answer - truly OUTSTANDING!! I can't say enough about this - probably the best salt pour gimmick ever produced.

It's another Hocus Pocus exclusive!

Sugar Rush is a modern version of the classic Long Salt Pour routine. Many magicians over the years have featured the Long Salt Pour in their acts usually as a closer because it's such a strong effect. The best known routines were performed by Roy Benson and Fred Kaps.

The History
In the early 1980's Bob Kohler started using the Long Salt Pour. As usual he created improvements over what had been done before. One new method gave him the power to produce as much salt as he wanted. There really was no limit to the amount. The best part is that this diabolical production method leaves you completely clean. No gimmicks anywhere!

In the early 1990's Bob shared his work with Scott Alexander. Scott took over and added his twists, turns and improvements as well. It took a decade but in the end Scott added the perfect music, a new manipulation and refined the production method even more.

In 2010 Scott and Bob decided to release Sugar Rush to the magic community. Once again putting their heads together on the plot and method they improved the routine yet again taking it to new heights.

As with all BK Pro Line products the routine was then audience tested countless times by Scott in front of live audiences. It's now officially a killer.

The Plot
So why is the routine called Sugar Rush if it's based on the Long Salt Pour? The answer is simple. The routine is done with a sugar packet. Even though the production is actually salt the audience is only aware of sugar.

The routine starts with Scott displaying a typical sugar packet. The sugar packet is torn open and the contents are poured into his hand. Whoosh...the sugar has vanished. We know, vanishing a small amount of sugar is not a big deal.

The power of the routine is the amount of "sugar" that is produced during the production. From empty hands streams of sugar pour forth! What we're going for is a classic magician in trouble plot. Think of Mickey Mouse in the Disney cartoon "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". Mickey loses control of the brooms and water buckets. Sugar Rush is the same. Scott apparently loses control over the sugar. Once it starts pouring he can't stop it. The pour lasts for exactly 2 minutes. Very funny stuff.

The Gimmicks
Sugar Rush relies on two sets of gimmicks. The first gimmick is based on the Pressley Guitar model but Bob has spent many hours improving it. Our gimmick is the same size as the Pressley model but holds approximately 20% more. This is a good thing.

The second improvement is subtle but makes the manipulation much easier. It concerns the way the CNC machine model has cut the neck and lip. Our gimmick has a superior opening which makes it easier to pour into. The opening also lets you dump much more salt instantly into your other hand at a critical juncture in the routine. When you need it now you get the load instantly.

The third improvement is the finish. The CNC aluminum gaff has been powder coated with a Matte Black finish. This finish basically makes the gimmick invisible on stage. Even if you flash it simply looks like a shadow to the audience. But with the new CNC design combined with the friction the Matte Finish provides your chance of flashing is nil.

The fourth improvement is that you can unscrew the bottom of the gimmick. This is a very useful feature. It makes it easy to clean inside and out plus you can add magnets if you desire.

The new gimmick is a mystery...

The Product

BRIEFCASE ILLUSION BY Paul Romhany

The Briefcase Illusion has been the opening for Paul Romhany's World Class Act for the past twenty years! An illusion that is designed to set up in less than five minutes, and pack flat in less than two! The possibilities are endless!! Use it as an appearance or vanish, as a solo illusion or with an assistant.

No mirrors or black art to worry about. The unique table design will allow you to use it throughout your show to retrieve or put away props, then at the right moment produce your assistant.

Basic Performance: The MC walks on stage with a briefcase, no magician, just the case. He then places it on top of a writing desk. The lid of the case open, and the magician makes his appearance out of the briefcase.

Basic Vanish: The magician places the case on top of the writing desk, and a girl is pushed inside. The magician then picks up the case and walks off stage.

Variations: Use this for other productions with or without the briefcase. In Romhany's routine the briefcase lid opens up and an eight foot ladder appears from it, then Romhany makes his appearance out of the briefcase as though he is climbing up the ladder.

At FISM it was used to vanish TWO people. The briefcase was placed on the floor in front of the writing desk and a girl was pushed down inside. The magician then picked up the case and placed it on the table and another assistant was put inside the case. The case was then picked up and the magician walked off stage.

Produce or Vanish an assistant away from the table - use the table as a place to conceal your assistant.

Puppetry: This was also used for a puppeteer who was concealed inside the writing desk and able to operate a puppet while the performer interacted with the puppet.

This week on the weekly Video Vlog my good friend Tony Chris drops by for a chat and performs a brand new effect he released at Magic Live. It's a fantastic routine that is very commercial and has a great story line. I particularly enjoyed it because of all the travel I do, so it was a perfect effect for me. Tony has different versions of the same idea using cars and other various themes. The quality of cards used are great and will last for many years if you perform regularly. Tony also performs his most popular routine, The Haunting. He has brought The Haunted Pack in to the 21st Century.

Also on the Vlog I review one of the coolest effects I've seen in a long time, Slowmotion by Joe Litvinchuk.

I have been busy writing this week, and working on The Pro Series of books. The Multiplying Bottles book has got great reviews and the first edition has almost sold out!! The Six Card Repeat will be in stock very shortly. I just completed another one yesterday, which is one of my favorites because it's a routine by my good friend Wayne Rogers. The routine is an updated version of the card sword, with a full eight minute routine. The book is a great addition to the Pro-Series and I'm pleased to have Wayne on board with this one. I have also completed the Color Change Hanky Pro-Series book, and it has step by step photos, various routines and some very unique handling for this routine. It has always been a staple in my comedy show on ships and corporate entertainment.

Also, here is a sneak preview of the covers of my two upcoming books - the book was so big that I had to split it in to two volumes. The material and contributors are absolutely incredible. The book is being proof read at the moment, then will be at the editing stage then print - I don't think it will be too long before it is released.

Slow Motion by Joe Litvinchuk

Without a doubt one of the coolest magic effects I've seen in a long time. What I love about this is that it's so clean. I spent the last two weeks road testing this on everybody I could - and every single person was blown away by it. I have also started experimenting with different possibilities and starting to realise that you can do so much more with it. There is a new term in magic, which is Organic Magic. This means magic that requires no props, or objects that aren't magic looking. I think it used to be called impromptu magic - or at least that is what it looks like. There are other effects on the market where the magician brings out a nut and bolt and the nut twists off - but the nut and bolt are supplied by the magician. In this case you can borrow a swizzle stick or straw and a lifesaver and perform a miracle.
There is a special gimmick which does all the work, it's invisible and I've tested it out under all different types of conditions, and not had any issues with it. This is definitely an effect you can carry with you at all times, and perform it both in your professional act, and when somebody asks you to show them something. I am also working on doing this with a finger ring. This has been flying off the shelves at Hocus-Pocus and it's easy to see why. The gimmick is very well built and I've put mine through the road test and it's going strong.

This is one of those effects that just makes sense. It's also one of those that makes you think, why didn't I think of that? What a perfect combination of a classic piece of magic brought up to date. I always thought it odd a magician would bring out a pocket knife - especially today. I don't know anybody who carries a pocket knife, except for magicians. However, THIS MAKES SENSE! Everybody carries flash drives with them, so why not a color changing flash drive. Just brilliant. On the command of the performer, the deck slowly, visibly and very eerily begins to move and separate. The deck now moves in an extremely haunting manner until the performer will command it to stop whenever he desires. The card where the deck has separated is removed and revealed to be the spectator's chosen card.
